The wide world of internet services has really expanded and evolved to an incredible extent over the last decade or more, and today people all over the country—and indeed in many parts of the world, including developing markets—fully expect to be able to have a very fast internet connection for their home or office.  What’s more, is that this expectation remains in effect practically no matter where a person lives or works.  Different services have been created to satisfy the needs of customers in different circumstances, yet one of the most prevalent services (now, and for a long time already) is ADSL, which stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line.  ADSL internet services are available for customers with ordinary phone lines, without the need to be connected into a special fiber-optics cable grid—a feature which has made it much more widely available than many other forms of internet access, especially cable.

ADSL offers customers a comparatively high rate of access in most cases, with speeds frequently topping multiple Mbps (though subject to degradation in cases of high internet traffic and/or poor cabling).  The phone line is used to carry your ADSL internet signal in addition to the habitual phone voice band signal, which is why it is necessary to have the right hardware to separate these different frequencies from one another and avoid interference.  Though in the past technicians had to come over and personally install the necessary filters, these days service providers practically all send out self-install kits including all the requisite filters, cables, modem, and power jack.  Sometimes coming in one piece and sometimes coming separate, a splitter divides the phone signal from the ADSL signal, and then the microfilter helps keep these signals from interfering with each other as they simultaneously travel to and from the central hub (your phone operator’s facilities) on the same copper wire.

A person’s ADSL services can really only be as good as the phone company offering them, which is an important factor to take into account when deciding if ADSL is the right option for you.  For many people, it is a clearly superior alternative among the others available on their local market.
