For humans who hate to be connected by wires, wireless broadband is the ultimate in convenient broadband Internet access.  Service that is made possible through wireless “hot spots” established this high-speed Internet in many metropolitan areas.  These wireless zones (also called “WiFi”) transmit an Internet signal over a radius of several hundred feet.  Laptop computers within this zone can detect the signal and establish an Internet connect with the right hardware and software.

Laptop computers by nature are very portable and these computers are the reason that wireless broadband was developed.  People who are constantly on the run with laptop in tote will fully appreciate the benefits of wireless broadband.  It works via a modem that is plugged into an Ethernet cable.  It then transmits the signal to the immediate area where it can be picked up by a computer capable of receiving such a signal.

In order for you to use wireless broadband, your computer must have an adapter installed, which can discern the proper signal and connect.  Most computers will also require some simple software configuration to enable the device.  Once this is done, you are ready to surf the Internet at broadband speeds from your favorite local hot spot.

As the technology becomes more popular, you will find wireless broadband available in more places.  Café’s and public areas often provide the service, sometimes free and sometimes for a fee.  Municipalities are broadcasting wireless Internet services through many public areas as well.  With a little hunting, you should be able to find some areas near you to access.

Wireless broadband is often used in private homes and businesses, and as a result, their signal will sometimes be transmitted beyond the property lines, which means that others who happen to be in close proximity may pick up the signal.  This could lead to access by unauthorized persons, which could jeopardize the security of your own system or allow strangers to access illegal material through your system.  At a minimum, additional unauthorized access can slow your system down.  In order to prevent this type of intrusion, your network can be set up with security passwords and firewalls to prevent this type of unauthorized access.

If you are interested in setting up your home or office for wireless broadband, you need to start by obtaining some type of broadband service such as cable or ADSL.  You would then need to install a modem (usually supplied by your broadband service provider) and then a wireless router.  This device will transmit the signal to your computer.

These systems are easy to set up and afford great convenience for laptop users.  If you are constantly on the go, get wired for wireless.
